Hello, this is LiMO Plastic Surgery Clinic.

If you've ever been bothered by a double chin that stands out every time you look in the mirror, you've probably searched for "double-chin liposuction" at least once.

But have you been hesitating after seeing reviews from others saying the area sagged again soon after liposuction, or that the results were minimal?

Today, we'll explain in very simple terms the key difference between the two most common methods for improving a double chin: double-chin liposuction and platysma muscle binding (platysmaplasty).

1. Why Liposuction Alone Doesn't Improve a Double Chin

Many people assume the cause of a double chin is simply "fat." Fat is indeed part of the problem, but the structure beneath the chin is more complex than most people think.

– What Is Double-Chin Liposuction?

It is a procedure that extracts fat cells from under the chin, much like drinking a beverage through a straw. The fat removed this way is often nicknamed "grape-cluster fat," because it comes out in small clusters resembling grapes. For people with thick subcutaneous fat under the chin (grape-cluster fat), a larger volume can be removed, so the results are more noticeable and in some cases, platysma muscle binding isn't even necessary.

– The Limits of Liposuction

Once the fat is removed, the space it used to occupy now becomes empty. But what if the tissue or muscle in that area was already loose to begin with?

In that case, the skin may not tighten/snap back properly against the area under the chin, or the underlying muscle may remain visibly sagging - leaving the double chin unresolved. Ultimately, because removing fat alone cannot tighten loose tissue, the degree of improvement is clearly limited, and the likelihood of recurrence is high.

2. What Is Platysmaplasty (Platysma Muscle Binding)?

So how is platysma muscle binding different?

Beneath our chin lies a broad muscle called the platysma muscle, which supports the area under the chin much like a hammock. Fat accumulates on top of it, and skin covers the whole structure. If this "hammock" is sagging, then even after the fat is removed and the skin has good elasticity, the area under the chin will still droop. Therefore, for people with a loose platysma muscle, "platysma muscle binding" refers to tightening this muscle so that it sits snugly against the area under the chin.

It may help to think of this as creating a "natural corset" that supports the area under the chin.

4. Why Is "Platysma Muscle Binding" Necessary?

Platysma Muscle Binding does more than simply remove fat. It involves deep dissection of the space under the chin to directly remove even the deep fat located beneath the muscle (submuscular fat). The separated muscle is then firmly sutured together, resulting in the following clear advantages:

1) A Clearly Noticeable Before-and-After Difference: The snug, tightened feeling under the chin can only be achieved through muscle repair.

2) Long-Lasting, Semi-Permanent Results: Because the muscle itself is physically sutured together, producing a structural improvement, the likelihood of sagging again over time is significantly lower.

3) Improved Chin-Neck Angle: Even those whose chin and neck boundary was previously indistinct can achieve a well-defined chin line when viewed from the side.

5. Which Method Is Right for Me?

You'll need to consider whether you simply want to reduce a small amount of fat, or whether you want to address the root cause of a double chin that has bothered you for a lifetime. If the area under your chin sags visibly even when viewed from the front, or if you were previously unsatisfied with the results of liposuction alone, platysma muscle binding is likely the more suitable option.

Platysma Muscle Binding is a highly advanced procedure that requires precise dissection and delicate muscle manipulation, so consulting with an experienced medical team that has a deep understanding of facial anatomy is strongly recommended.
